Entry #3- What Pressure?

Welcome back! Music is one of the best ways to lose yourself from real life. But what is the song really about? Music sends messages that the artist wants to deliver, whether you relate to it or not, but probably do. Encanto is a popular Disney movie, and catchy at that. One song that can pull on an older sibling's heart strings, or anyone's, would have to be the song sung by the character Luisa, Surface Pressure.

The speaker in this song is Mirabel's big sister, Luisa. Luisa is opening up as to how stressful it can be to be the one that the family entrusts. Making sure the family is protected, but also concerned that the weight of the responsibilities makes her nervous that she may fail them and lose her sense of identity. Being the "rock" of the family isn't always the perfect role in the family. Sometimes, being the rock can mean needing help to lessen the stress and pressure that you carry, not only for your family but also the community. Younger siblings see how great an older sibling is and seeing how great they handle and take care of things. But it's not always as glamorous as what it seems. Many can relate to this song, with having a lot of one's own responsibilities and being relied on. Parents have children who look to them for safety and nurturing. Students look up to their teachers, professors, for guidance. It doesn't always have to be a sibling, or family.

The message here is that, although you may view this strong person as a hero, they too have their concerns that they may not be good enough or even tough enough to do it all. Instead of adding onto the mountains of responsibilities, let's lend a hand and help relieve them from some of the stress. You never know if one day they would like to experience some sense of weightlessness and maybe fly with unicorn donkeys.

This song has many tones. You can almost feel the nervousness of her letting her family down when she says,  "I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us." She sang very impassioned, and pragmatic. It is a very realistic way of how some people may be feeling. Making this song a perfect example of fear that one may have.

I am sure this song may get stuck on repeat, it's very catchy and fun. I'd like to know your thoughts on this song and how it makes you feel. This is a great Disney movie and a very cute song. Til next time, Bye!

SURFACE PRESSURE

I’m the strong one, I’m not nervous
I’m as tough as the crust of the Earth is
I move mountains, I move churches
And I glow ’cause I know what my worth is

I don’t ask how hard the work is
Got a rough, indestructible surface
Diamonds and platinum, I find ’em, I flatten ’em
I take what I’m handed, I break what’s demanded, but

Under the surface
I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus
Under the surface
Was Hercules ever like, “Yo, I don’t wanna fight Cerberus”?
Under the surface
I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service

A flaw or a crack
The straw in the stack
That breaks the camel’s back
What breaks the camel’s back?

It’s pressure like a drip, drip, drip, that’ll never stop, whoa
Pressure that’ll tip, tip, tip, ’til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, your sister’s older
Give her all the heavy things we can’t shoulder
Who am I if I can’t run with the ball?
If I fold to

Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won’t let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick, ’til it’s ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, your sister’s stronger
See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can’t carry it all?
If I falter

Under the surface
I hide my nerves and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us
Under the surface
The ship doesn’t swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is
Under the surface
I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?

Line up the dominoes
A light wind blows
You try to stop it tumbling
But on and on it goes

But wait, if I could shake
The crushing weight of expectations
Would that free some room up for joy?
Or relaxation? Or simple pleasure?
Instead, we measure this growing pressure
Keeps growing, keep going
‘Cause all we know is

Pressure like a drip, drip, drip, that’ll never stop, whoa
Pressure that’ll tip, tip, tip, ’til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, it doesn’t hurt and
See if she can handle every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks

No mistakes, just

Pressure like a grip, grip, grip, and it won’t let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick, ’til it’s ready to blow, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister and never wonder
If the same pressure would’ve pulled you under
Who am I if I don’t have what it takes?
No cracks, no breaks
No mistakes, no pressure

  1. You definitely chose an amazing song to talk about because I feel like Disney songs always have a lot of meaning behind it. I really enjoy this movie and mostly it's music because it shows how people can look so calm and perfect from the outside but in truth everyone has their problems and this movie does a really good job at showing it. Sometimes I forget that these movies are for kids because of how good they are. -Viridiana Sandoval
